Black Sails series 4 is two episodes in and the action is moving along at a rip roaring pace. There are of course the poetic quiet moments of pause that knits the epic romp amongst the blood and guts together with the tactical chess our heroes and villains conduct.
It is the concluding series of what has been the most fantastic representation of a dangerous era, a time when one of the most romantic anti-establishment movement is reaching a conclusion, a crescendo if you will, before the storm of Long John Silver as we have known for all these years.
So how does it match up to the previous series?
As yet its not as sexy, not as blood thirsty but it sure is smoldering. While there is still cut throating, sword stabbing, incredible sets, costumes, bluff and double bluff this series is building. There is an undertone that does not give you any fucking idea if your heroes or your villains will prevail.
Me personally, I just want Captain Flint to go bat shit on everyone, tear everyone and thing apart in his quest for justice, glory, domination. To fire a big fuck you to the establishment and live in an organised chaos. Billy is turning a bit weird, strutting his stuff like the petulant teenager against his all conquering father Flint, will he come round? Captain Black Beard (Ed Teach) is brooding and so damn intimidating I am sure he could take most of the King’s navy in a rowing boat half pissed and only a spoon. Rackham? Hmmm bit wet but has got the balls to go balls deep when necessary and its his wit, thinking and fast vocab that elevates him correctly making him a tough adversary.
Governor Rogers has stood firm, he refuses to give in to the pirates he is tactically aware plus is having lots of innie-outtie with Eleanor. Rogers with his Captain Berringer seems to be taking control with their own brand of violence – how long will it last? French madame Max is still going on and on, I have no clue really why she is so important and not just killed. She has managed to piss off just about everyone who has helped her survive.
Pirate King – Long John Silver. Now here is a name that is frightening the beejesus out of all. Enough they want to rally to him or kill him. He is the one we know survives – but how and who goes with him.
I haven’t commented on the first two episodes as you need to watch them – NOW – then come back to me.
I am looking forward to Captain Flint taking Nassau its got to happen right? Who will survive?Who will shag who? There is to be a conclusion this series as its the final one (boo!) I will watch and comment more.
